Wyoming’s Gatorade Player of the Year: Coy Steel

on

Since 1965, athletes have trusted Gatorade to replenish their fluids after taxing workouts and arduous games. It didn’t take long for the Floridian concoction to take off and become the best-known sports drink worldwide, and it’s remained dedicated to the athletes it was created for.

In 1985, Gatorade started honoring one high school athlete from each state in each of several sports: Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, Softball, and Track. These athletes are named Gatorade Player of the Year based on “their athletic excellence, academic achievement, and exemplary character.”

This year, Wyoming’s football Gatorade Player of the Year is Sheridan’s number 12, Coy Steel: wide receiver and defensive back for the Broncs’ back-to-back State Champion Team. Steel has been immersed in the athletic community of Wyoming since he was physically capable, and he hasn’t slowed down since.

“I owe a lot of credit to my teammates and coaches for helping me get in the right situations, and put me in a place to make plays.” – Coy Steel.

In the 2016 season alone, he caught 63 passes for 1,033 yards and 14 touchdowns, as well as landing 68 defensive tackles and 2 interceptions. The Broncs went 11-1 this last football season, and their exemplary efforts earned them another state championship.

Steel has been given the opportunity by the Gatorade Play it Forward program to give $1,000 to a local or national charity dedicated to providing youth with easier access to sports programs.

Anyone who knows Coy has experienced his charisma and knows that his hard work and positive attitude on and off the field makes him more than deserving of this award. “It’s a great honor to receive to cap off the state championship season,” Steel told us about his Player of the Year award. Coy did make sure that we knew he didn’t get to where he is now without help: “I owe a lot of credit to my teammates and coaches for helping me get in the right situations, and put me in a place to make plays.” His final Highschool Football season having come to a close, Coy shared with us that “I wouldn’t have wanted to play anywhere else or with anybody else.”
